URBAN TOTEM POLE SCULPTURE

OPEN AIR STUDIO IN FRONT OF ANDERSONVILLE GALLERIA.

LIVE on the sidewalk in front of the Andersonville Galleria, located at 5247 N. Clark Street, during the weekend of Saturday, Oct 4th and Sunday Oct 5th.  fFunded in part by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council (IACShe will be working in collaboration with Anas Ben-Musa, (benMUSA Art) to complete the sculpture.  Experience in working in public, the artist often engages spectators while creating and, at times, incorporating ideas generated by this engagement.

The Totem, with the exception of the armature (skeleton), will be created in its entirety over a two-day period outside the Andersonville Galleria.  Yadi will pre-build the armature in her Evanston studio and apply the first layer of designer cement to all but one side, to allow viewers to experience portions of the raw form before totally encasing the skeleton.  In conjunction, the artists will challenge one another in creating small colorful acrylic paintings on canvas during the drying stages of the Totem layers.  The paintings will be on exhibit and for sale inside the Galleria upon completion.

The artists will be using a combination of cement, specialty papers, acrylics, and mosaic mediums to execute the Totems design.  The Totem, approximately, 6 foot (h) x 1 foot (w) in size will be a reflection of urban living, as envisioned by the artists.  Yadi and Anas will combine their artist skills and talents using various materials to fashion an art piece that honors the 2008 Chicago Artists Month theme - "Artists and Issues that Matter."
